Precycle NZ has teamed up with Palmerston North City Council and Environment Network Manawatu to trial a paper towel recovery and recycling initiative. Get in touch now if your office, gym, lab, or business would like to be involved.
We are currently developing new-to-market construction materials from both post-consumer waste and pre-consumer primary industry byproducts. Several prototypes have been developed and are currently being tested against NZ construction materials standards.
We are currently researching opportunities to recycle C&D waste within NZ. This included timber waste, fiberglass, glazing, plastics and more. We will be publishing a report late 2023
We are working with local materials importers and wholesalers to test new-to-market products structural and mechanical properties. This will allow longer lifespan of the products, improving the life cycle and reducing the frequency of need for virgin materials to be used.
Precycle NZ has worked alongside Children's University, Massey University, Environmental Network Manawatu, and local businesses to deliver presentations and workshops to primary schools across the region. This includes interactive waste audits, learning about waste and recycling systems and infrastructure in NZ, and litter clean-ups.
Precycle NZ is working alongside councils in the Horizons region to reduce the environmental impacts of large public events by creating a circular economy. Through our services we have reduced contamination of all recycling bins to <10% meaning they can successfully be recycled and composted, where they would otherwise be taken to landfill. We have removed litter from event sites during and after events and working with vendors to enable correct packaging choices.
We have been working alongside Levno to develop greater sustainability outcomes on their journey to becoming a B Corp. This included a full environmental impact assessment, encouraging enviro-focused skunk works the creation and a green team, and regular litter clean ups along the Te Araroa Trail.
"I think Precycle do very well to understand the context of what we're trying to do and the challenges that we face in progressing these.
For me the audits have helped with reporting to the senior leadership team and the board, it helps with decision making and where to focus our next stepts. ie. quote for carbon footprint assessments." - Chris Marshall (Products and Improvements Manager at Levno)
Precycle NZ surveyed 60 businesses from 15 industries across the Manawatu to understand their waste and recycling behaviors and identify resource recovery opportunities. Our aim was to identify the main material unable to be recycled in the region, and to highlight new resource recovery opportunities for locals. After identifying the main materials unable to be recycled in the region, some key materials have been chosen to explore further and test recycling solutions for. These include Construction & Demolition waste, along with other high fiber waste streams.
Precycle NZ conducted a waste audit alongside students at a rural Manawatu school as an educational activity in 2022. With the students help, we sorted through 2 weeks of their general waste and discussed what could be done to reduce it further.
Delivered and presented to MDC a submission around the 2022 WMMP, in collaboration with Environment Network Manawatu
We developed and piloted a product stewardship program for PP plastic cable drums alongside B&M Electrical, JA Russel and Environment Network Manawatu. These developed a pathway to have them recycled locally instead of landfilled, with proceeds to Plastic Pollution Challenge to remove litter from urban streams.
Alongside CivilAssist, we delivered a proposal for the new Tairāwhiti Resource Recovery Centre to help the Tairāwhiti region manage their waste Centre, and an Emissions Reduction Plan
Nelson worked with ANZCO Foods in their McDonalds patty manufacturing plant where he built a personalized tool to measure their carbon footprint , found and negotiated solutions for managing their waste to avoid landfill, and designed waste water treatment improvements
Nelson worked in the Hawkes Bay Sustainable is Attainable team to find collaborative solutions to add value to biological byproducts and non-biological waste streams. This included working for more than 30 food businesses including McCain, Cedenco, Ovation, NZ Juice and more, conducting waste audits and reporting different options to add value or minimize environmental impact from each waste stream
A recycling systems audit was done for WOOP in Manawatu to ensure their recycling systems were as advertised, with a great result!
